I’ve owned a DSLR for 20 years. However, as the phone cameras have got better, I had almost totally stopped taking that out with me, just to avoid the bulk. A couple of years ago, I got a Sony A6400 as the compact mirrorless cameras made taking one along more palatable. I do a lot of travel for work, and I have been taking the camera along with me to do a walk around street photography at least one evening in my travels.
I had never really been a raw shooter, relying on automatic settings to get photos. In reality I never invested enough time to understand the exposure triangle. However, since having the Sony, I’ve been spending a bit of time with that with some reasonable personal satisfaction. I ended up getting Luminar Neo to do some editing when they had an 85% sale. Couldn’t really justify shelling out more capable editing software, due to sporadic nature of my photography.
That still means quite a lot of effort spending time selecting photos that I may decently like, and then working on them to give the type of look that I want. This is what led me to go down the rabbit hole of Fuji film simulations. I’ve had a look at how I could get some of those looks in my A6400. I’ll try those out shortly. In the meantime, I’ve got a serious case of Fuji camera envy. Using retro looking film looks JPEGs straight out of the camera seems really enticing.
